ONE WAY TO KEEP THESE BAD BOYS OUT OF JAIL
This is the way he is, and he has been re-elected several times ... Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!!:
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them. He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.
He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.
He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them.....this is a good one......"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."
He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.
You have to love this guy!!

true that
its a nonsense to make jail a good place to stay.
why do they even have TVs and weights anyways?
good meals? good education? coffee?
weather controlled shelter?
are the victims live like that too?

AS native 50 yr charlottean its so sad to see us turn into barrios. East charlotte is toast and its encroaching down south blvd. If the 4 apartments complexes on Johnston rd next to cameron wood are any indication (3 of the 4 lowered their rental schedules, i guess the market demanded it, cant blame them) we are FAR UNDERESTIMATING the latino population..
The larcenies in surrounding neighborhoods have increased exponentially just in 2 yrs.
Schools are dangerous because we have taken away the fear of paddling, plain and simple.
Tick by tick we take away the downside of bad behavior, hence the abberant behavior goes unabated.
Anybody in america that, whether its bill Cosby or anyone else, who says "hey that not appropriate" gets villified by the media, hence no one else will say a word, as not be personally attacked.
hence....kids hear no downside to the poor behavior... is this TOO obvious?
With a local paper , the Observer, refusing to give us cold hard facts, we are left with a paper that does an enormous disservice to its community
Yesterday the Observer stated, Hispnaics robbed, "indicates recent alarming trend of latinos being robbed" WHAT ABOUT the trend that of common demoninator of the black, white, and latino victims that are mugged , that the perpetrators are in 91% of cases all of one race!. Did that miniscule trend excaope the observer?

i realized thats the only PC way to bring up a critical topic is to make the perpetrator also the victim.... give me a break

I share the same thoughts as Elliot. Criminals never once gave any thought to the misery they caued someone else or the crimes they commited. Why should the rest of the people who do obey the law have to provide TV and other recreation to people who broke the law?
And why are we allowing such short sentences for violent or repeat offenders?

Here is my question in one of the jails near the border to mexice they make the mexican's learn to speak English. How wonderful if you can't speak english you need to leave this country now. I don't know what you are saying and I don't know if you are planning to attack me. The mexican population is no better than the caucasian or african americans. They are starting to commit as many crimes as the american. Why don't they go commit the crimes in their home country. Oh I forgot if you are illegal it is a cheap way to get home they don't pay for it we do. The American's that live here, pay taxes and don't have health insurance. go down to social services and the foreigners out number the americans any more. Before my mom died took her down there and I was appalled at the foreign people taking our hard earned moeny for themselves.

This soultion would work if:
A: We could get more crminals in jail, in particular violent offenders
B: We could keep them there

Elliot..your post reminds me of when my children were young, I had whipped one of them...yes I whipped my kids, I did not beat them, I whipped them & they both survived and are college grads now. Anyway, one of the little twerps said they were going to call & report me for child abuse. I told them to go ahead...I could use a break, free cable, and 3 meals served to me daily sounded real good. I might never come back home. Yes, jail should not be a vacation
