It is easy to disparage the police department but this would be a typical knee jerk reaction. The police are responsible for making arrests and bringing the cases to the District Attorney's office for prosecution. If you examine the issue closely, you will see that these perps are getting arrested time and time again...i.e. the police are doing their jobs. Are they being prosecuted]? That is a another matter. A perfect example: on a typical day, CMPD makes 20-30 drug arrests throughout Mecklenburg County, about 1/3 being felony arrests. The D.A.'s office only has enough trial time to bring 35 cases to a jury trial A YEAR! Do the math...that is over 3000 felony drug arrests a year and our DA's office is only willing to take 35 to a jury trial if necessary. Where do the other cases go? Plea bargains and outright dismissals. In essence you have legalized drug dealing de facto. This holds true across the board with other felony crimes as well. The only thing that we have working in our favor, is that we do get some federal prosecution for the worst of the worst but this would only amount to about 1% (yes 1%) of the cases. The problem lies within our District Attorneys office. Peter Gilchrist has been the head DA for the last 20+ years. (at least as long as I have been a cop) He is an elected official. This situation did not happen overnight. It has gradually deteriorated over the past number of years to where we are today. Where has the outcry been for more resources over the years? I have only heard the request for more resources for the DA's office in the past 2-3 years but that has been more of a whisper than an outcry! We actually spend more taxpayer money defending the perps in Mecklenburg County than prosecuting them! Yes the criminal justice system in Mecklenburg County is broken but the police are holding up their end. The blame lies in the failure to prosecute those that have been arrested.

I agree, it's a shame that these cases aren't prosecuted as soon as they should be. Because of this, things will be significantly worse in a few years. As these gangsters realize that they stand more of a chance getting away with committing crimes, the more they will commit and/or even worse, the more they will migrate to my lovely city. As I have traveled all over the world, I never thought that Charlotte would wind up with a problem like this.

I noticed the last post on this page was Oct. 11, 2006 at 5: 30ish am. The topic is the rising crime in Charlotte. My son Christopher Brynarsky had called me on Monday night Oct. 9, 2006 and we talked about just that. He told me he knew two people who were robbed by gun point while pumping gas in the middle of the day. Chris was in the process of moving his custom body shop closer to Charlotte and he and his wife were concerned about the potential danger. Chris would be working late in the shop getting it set up for business. So his wife bought him a shot-gun to keep in the shop and they were going to get a watch dog to be with him on the nights he would have to work late. On the morning of Oct. 11, 2006 at around 11:25am, a customer came into the current shop location in Stallings, with a gun and shot Chris, killing him instantly. Chris and Dana had fears of the new location, not the current location in Stallings. I believe we have many young sociopaths living among us who have no regard for human life and no fear of the law. The 23 year old man who killed my son was only sentenced to 12 years.

Does anyone think about how the liberal criminal justice system doesn't work for the poor minority neighborhoods. These liberal judges release these dangerous people back into the community where they rob, rape and terrorize the citizens of their community. However, people from this community continue to elect liberal judges who are not tough on crime.

Oldcop's right, 100%. This is what the DA's Office advises us up front. It's true and a shame, but the "nature of the beast".
