My 22 year old son was murdered - shot in the back of the head by someone he thought was a friend. While the police have been very kind to us, the DA's office is another issue. We live out of state and have had to rely on calling the DA's office to try to get information. Basically I was told there are so many murders and this is just another murder. My son just graduated from UNC-C, had been working as an paid intern for about 3 years, and had a job a TIAA-CREF. He was scheduled to start graduate school. His murderer will not be receiving any jail time - 3 years probation. It was an accident and he forgot he had a gun in his hand. This occurring AFTER a shot was already fired during an argument/fight between the murderer & my son. I HAVE NOT GOTTEN ANY STRAIGHT ANSWERS FROM ANYONE. Statements from the murderer and the witness (HIS FRIEND) are conflicting. I have been told by the DA & Detective that the system sucks; it is broken; this is all they have to work with. The ADA brought up "equality" - this is not about equality; it is about being accountable and responsible for criminal acts. I told him when people in Charlotte say they got by with murder; they were telling the truth. He agreed & acknowledged the murderer was lying. I was also told that my family and my dead son HAVE NO RIGHTS, only the defendant has rights. The murderer is being offered a plea bargain to avoid the expense & resources of a trial. Another murderer will continue to walk the streets of Charlotte knowing they got by with murder.
