One Shot at Eastland Mall
POSTED: 11:11 pm EST December 22, 2006
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police patrolled Eastland Mall late Friday night, looking for clues to a shooting just after 8 p.m.
Two groups fought in the mall before the shooting, but police wouldn't say if the shooting was gang-related. At least four shots were fired and one person was hit in the neck. That person was expected to survive. Police said the gunmen took off in a silver Chevy Cobalt with three black men inside.

Shooting at Eastland Mall injures 1
MELISSA MANWARE mmanware@charlotteobserver.com
Gunfire inside Eastland Mall Friday sent Christmas shoppers ducking for cover and landed one man in the hospital.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the shooting happened at about 8:15 p.m., after an argument just outside a back entrance to the east Charlotte mall.
The shooter was outside the mall, said Capt. Brian Cunningham, and fired through a glass entrance, striking someone inside. Police believe the victim had been involved in the argument, Cunningham said.
The victim, who was not immediately identified, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with what police believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Police were looking for three men in a silver car in connection with the shooting.
Phillip Coley, 16, a frequent Eastland shopper, said he still feels comfortable there. But Twana McCain, 18, said she doesn't like coming to Eastland.
"This mall always has big problems," she said.
Eastland has seen its share of violence and trouble over the past few years, including a 150-person parking lot brawl in 2004 and a shooting in 2005.
Because of competition and declining income in the surrounding area, the mall has struggled to hold its major tenants. Last week, Belk announced it would close its Eastland store.

In Reference to the shooting at Eastland mall, this place has a long history of problems as you all know. About 5-6 years ago at Christmas time, I was doing freelance news for a local television station. I responded to a call there to a shooting. Someone was being chased by on foot with a car. The suspect(s) in the car were firing a pistol at the person running as he zigged and zagged between cars. Probably at least 10-12 shots were fired and near as many vehicles damaged. All this was occurring as shoppers, men, women and children were walking in the under roofed parking lot.
This mall first started having major problems around the time Hugo hit Charlotte. A lot of kids started catching the bus from other parts of town and hanging out there. In order to try to discourage them from hanging in the mall, the mall started playing Country & Western music over the mall sound system. It wasn’t “cool” then to hang out there and this worked for awhile. Later, the mall shops began to change and cater to this type of crowd and does so even now suffering the results of same.
