I have a question, how much does “POP Culture” play in forming the attitudes of some of these young suspects? I have listened too (when forced) the prevailing MTV stile of music and in some places hard core gangster rap. The prevailing message is very pro money at any cost, us against them attitude whether it’s the police or other people. The other strong message is respect/me fear me because if you don’t I will kill you/hurt you. And women are reduced to objects to be used. I realize that this is a generalization of this type of pop culture. In the past I have had so many instances where I have had to deal with juveniles and people in their 20s who quote the lyrics of a song as they go to jail. I recently had an opportunity to look at the web site Face book. Overall its ok and better than My Space but even Face book has its groups and it’s hard to tell how serious they are about what they say. What is your read outs on this? I would like others opinions.

Hey Bill,
I deal with a lot of these younger kids after they've been sentenced, and this pop-culture is prevelant with just about all of them. The materialistic attitude these songs, videos and artists portray is destroying the values of these kids. When I asked one kid why he robbed people, he said "I wanted stuff and that was the only way to get it."
All of society focuses heavily on a person's possessions as a mark of their success. Materialism is a problem across all ethnic groups and social classes in this country. But when you've got an influential group of people like the hip-hop artists and rappers focusing on one group and telling them its ok to act a certain way to get what they want, its a recipe for disaster.
The only way this is going to end is if someone from within the musical scene steps up and starts taking a different approach. Maybe some hardcore rapper will find the light and start preaching a different message and get through to some people. Who knows...
