My experience in no way compares to the others who have lost a loved one. My heart goes out to them. My husband and I were out of town when our house was broken into by two criminals, Reico Lamont Welch and Donnell Pope on June 6, 2005. These losers broke into my home in the middle of the afternoon and parked a rented van in the driveway while they loaded all of our belongings into it.
Our driveway is somewhat secluded, and since this was around noon, our neighbors did not notice anything since most of them were at work. Luckily the security alarm did go off, but these two stuck around for another 20 minutes, giving the police time to respond. They were captured after a helicopter chase and many police were involved.
The police did everything they could possiby do and more. According to my Brother-In-Law, they were at our house for hours processing the crime scene. They recovered most of our belongings, but we had to pay a $1,000 deductible to repair the damages to our home. I know we were luckier than most.
Reico Welch and Donnell Pope were both arrested and released the next day. Reico Welch had just been released from prison on 5/13/05. He was then jailed again on 6/26/05 after breaking into someone elses home. Donnell Pope also was arrested on 6/29/05 for the same thing.
I believe the police are doing the best job they can and I applaud their efforts. It must be frustrating for them as well that these criminals keep committing the same offenses with little or no repercussions. Until there are more jails to house the criminals for longer periods of time, or until there are stricter laws for repeat offenders, this problem will not go away.
I have lost faith in our criminal justice system and have also lost my sense of security.
