There's a show called Personal Defense TV on Time Warner. It runs a repeat a few times a week. It's one of the upper channels [maybe 149]. Most of it is geared to gun owners and self-defense, but they do have pieces on non-lethal defense as well as tactics.
You can defend yourself more than you think. It begins with training the mind. You are on this forum because you are aware of the crime problem. You can do something to help yourself. Start thinking about your surroundings.
Also, stop by your local PD and ask for an officer to come out and inspect your home for weaknesses. Even if you don't have an alarm, a show a few years ago interviewed career crimials [20/20 I believe] and career criminals said a sign saying there was an alarm would often make them look somewhere else.
