Ok, so there were at least 4 break-ins that I know of this evening near S Tryon and 485 where Wal-Mart and 485 intersect, south of Arrowood road.
And I witnessed some fraud.
So I come out of Lowe's and go to put some items in the back of my vehicle, when I realize the console lid is up inside. Stand back and take inventory of situation, yup it was broken into. They popped the lock on driver's door (only door w/ a keyhole). Rumaged through front and rear console, glove box, sunglasses holder overhead, still thinking about it, but can't figure out what, if anything, they stole. Left a radar detector on the windshield, left change in the console tray, left the car registration papers, although rumaged through.
Guy a couple spots over was broken into, but he left his truck unlocked. Then, a third unknown person had their cd case and wallet left on the ground in a nearby parking space. When I called police, dispatch said another person was broken into over by Luigi's pizza on the other side of Wal-Mart.
Sidenote: I had a friend staying at a hotel near carowinds a couple weeks ago, and they smashed the window, rumaged through it, but didn't seem to take anything either.
So, while I'm waiting for the police to show up, to return the stolen property we found on the ground, which took about 45 minutes, a guy in a medium colored old (80s?) For pick up pulled up, w/ a wooden plywood painted shell around the bed of the truck, and an older white male was gonna go into Lowe's. So, I told him he should lock up his truck, coz he left his window open, so he did. While he was inside, a younger/middle aged white female and a younger black male approached the truck, seemingly walking from Wal-Mart. I noticed the pant legs on her jeans were wet from walking in the rain/wet streets somewhere. She was complaining that Wal-Mart wouldn't return her small bag full of crap w/out the receipt and she wondered why the truck was locked. She asked me if I wanted to buy some of her crap in the bag. Then the guy finally comes out of Lowe's, w/ a new Dewalt Sawz All, and proceeds to offer me a chance to buy it for $40, says he paid $80. I told him I wasn't interested. So it seemed to me they were buying things w/ stolen funds/credit cards, selling items on the street, and/or returning them to the store later.
So I got his plate number, and a minute later the cop showed up. I tried to tell him what I witnessed, and the truck was still in view, but he wanted to take one thing at a time, so we dealt w/ the break in of my vehicle, and the recovered stolen property I had in my possession, before we got to the other potential fraud thing, at which point when running the plate, it came back as a stolen plate, so that didn't help much. But I have him a description of the vehicle, and the bumber sticker slogan on the back.
So, I'm standing there in a parking lot I've frequented over the years, just surrounded by multiple crimes, and not a whole lot the police could do about it at that point.
Wonder how many ACC visitors are gonna get mugged, robbed, burglarized while in town this weekend, or in a couple weeks when the NCAA comes here. When will our elected and appointed officials start taking notice and do something about these criminals?
