I believe all criminals should pay restitution for their crimes. If they have victimized someone financially, they should work their behind off to pay it back. If they don't pay it back, they should be put in jail.
I also believe in community service. If the judges will not sentence these criminals to jail, they should at least get probation AND community service. Make the criminals responsible for their crimes! If they are held responsible, maybe they will think twice next time!

Jack,
I agree with you 100%! I would feel so much better if the punk who stole my car had to repay me for my car. (I did not have comprehensive insurance so I lost a $6,500 car that day!) I still think he should be IN JAIL but they (the DA's) should have at least demanded he pay me restitution. I would have been happy knowing he was sentenced to some community service and was picking up garbage on the side of the road but I don't even get that pleasure. Of course, I could sue him in civil court but I would have to pay for it...

I went to court in August 2005 and was promised $1366 in restitution. It is over a year later and I still have yet to recieve a penny because Charlotte and North Carolina demand that they recieve their money before the victim (until court fees, probation fees, etc. are paid off I receive nothing)! Are ya'll aware that Probation Fees do not even go to the Correctional System/Probation Office? That money goes into a general Legislative fund that can be used for whatever by those in charge in NC. THIS is why NC is so messed up.

I've read that restitution reduces the crime rate. When a criminal is required to personally face their victim, it humbles their attitude and encourages them to straighten up. Restitution also helps the victim. It puts a human face on their offender, and aids the reconciliation/recovery needed by the victim.

one more comment about restitution. I believe it would have value in other places. I've been a victim of a very serious automobile accident. It would have been helpful to me if the man who caused the accident would have been required to $ettle with my family out of his personal finances. That would have given us more opportunity to reconcile/recover from negative feelings towards our offender. I believe that the auto insurance industry removes motorists from personal responsibility for their actions. Is it possible that personal restitution might lower the car accident rate?
