Find a way to make it harder for people to drive cars that are stolen or have invalid tags, and you'll cut back on serious crime like robbery, vandalism, gang activity, dangerous driving, etc.
Thugs getting ready to do crime want a 'throwaway' - a car they can drive and abandon without it being traced to them. So that's either a stolen car with the license tags switched, or an old car with a 'temporary' tag.
There needs to be a way to simply glance at a tag and tell if it was meant for the car it is assigned to - both regular tags and temporary tags.
Anecdote: there's a Section 8 house across the street from me. At one time all five cars there had invalid, expired or illegal license tags. 4 of the five people living there have now been arrested for felony crimes, most accomplished with the help of a car that police could not easily trace.

The criminals have nothing to fear anymore. I say let them learn that they may have to go to Iraq and may die to defend our country. Instead bring the military back and let them step up the lines of crime fighting and train these young offenders to go and fight for our country. Most would be scared to death and wouldn't make it home. let them get blown to puieces at time. That is how you take care of criminal population. It is a shame that Sadam Hussein was put to death so quickly and yet we have these repeat offenders that just go in and out of the system. Let's put these criminals over there and let them commit the same crimes they do here and they will not last a year over there.

I agree that certain crimes should be punised severely but drawing parallels between Saddam and common thiefs isn't warranted. Saddam was far worse than some of the more prolific serial killers in history let alone a common car thief.

My wife was murdered by a black thug teenager who wanted a car to go to a basketball game. He was caught, but is now in a work release program because he has been "rehabilitated". He was on probation for stealing cars before but that didn't matter. He was sentenced to Life plus 28 years. Now, 16 years later he is on work release. Watch out for the guy serving you hamburgers, he is a convicted murderer!

Now in some states when you go to the DMV they give you your plate right then and there. No temp. tags to worry about. Good luck persuading Raleigh on that though.

Ned, I am very sorry for your loss, but in the post it was really no need to play the race card on the matter rather the teenager was of a different race or not. We would have gotten the point just as clear with out it being said "black thug teenager"

Hi all.. on Dec 21,2007 at about 9:45 pm my brother-in-laws 2006 Dk Grey Ford F-250 turbo Super Duty Truck was stolen from the NorthLake Mall in front of MACEY'S on Harris Blvd in charlotte. It is a very big truck it has a 6"lift on top of the already big suspension. It has a matching grey bed cover top {slimline design} i think 35 series tires and chrome moto-metal mags. It has orange pinstripes, custom 4x4 logos in a sort of blood dripping design with chrome inserts between the 4x4 letters on the rear bed, orange shock covers very highly noticeable truck. The security tape showed two males , to dark to identify races of suspects , looked like they were wearing white jackets or light colored jackets cameras were to unclear to be exact. It took only 15 sec to steal the TRUCK. It also contained my nephews christmas gift which was a bowflex extreme brand new in box. I do not have the tag number my brother in law has all the information at his shop which i can't get till tomorrow. Any one with information or knowledge of where stolen cars end up in the university area would be great.

from officers I have spoken to, it doesn't seem like Charlotte has a lot of so-called "chop shops" as in NY. Many stolen cars here are used for
a) the commission of a crime b) joy rides (yes, there are something like 40% of stolen cars are poor teenagers who steal them to go on fun jaunts, then dump them somewhere). A neighbor of mine had his Lexus stolen twice, and both were recovered within five days -- and the leather was destroyed, scores of cigarette burns and tons of empty liquor bottles. Both times. !
But I do agree, tons and tons of cars here in Charlotte are stolen just to have a non-traceable way to aid in the commission of a crime.
