It doesn't seem that last year was the worst year on record for homicides it was back in 1991 and 1993. 91 had 115 homicides while 1993 was at a an all time record high of 129 homicides. It seems like it fluctuates from high to low a lot. So the last two years are on a rise but now it seems like it was not the worst year on record. Year Number of Homicides 1986 58 1987 49 1988 45 1989 73 1990 93 1991 115 1992 99 1993 129 1994 88 1995 89 1996 71 1997 59 1998 65 1999 84 2000 75 2001 66 2002 67 2003 66 2004 60 2005 85 2006 83

What year was it that the serial killer was on the loose in Charlotte, didn't he kill 26 women in 1993? That would have risen the totals, surely.

If the serial killer you are referring to is Henry Louis Wallace he killed 5 women. Not that that makes it any less horrific. He was arrested in 1994.

Perhaps some of the early 90's perpetrators are staring to get released from prison and committing repeat crimes. That would account for the decline followed by a rise 10-15 years later.

I think its due to the fact that the crack-babies are all grown up now. Think about it. The high rise in crack cocaine use of the mid to late 80s produced a lot of messed up kids who's emotional development was forever hindered due to the damage their crackhead mothers did to their brains. That, followed by an unnurturing environment breeds killers.

Would anyone be willing to make the effort do this as per capita? Charlotte has a lot more people now than in 1993, so the percentage may be a lot less than it was then.

In response to Henry Louis Wallace. In fact, I believe he was convicted for nine murders. All were women he had a relationship with in some way. Many he worked with at various fastfood establishments. Wallace was sentenced to death and is now at Raleigh Central Prison awaiting execution. According to one report he has even confessed to another ten murders since he was sent to prison. Wallace has ballooned to over 400 pounds on Death Row, so I would surmise that prison food is not all that bad.
Also during 1993, a major drug gang was busted in Charlotte. The leaders were Cecil and Orrin Jackson and both are now doing a hundred plus years in Federal prison. This gang was responsible for a large amount of crime in Charlotte during that period and no doubt their incarceration has had a effect on Queen City Crime rates.

Orrin Jackson is my father and Cecil Jackson is my uncle. The amount of time they recived for the crime(s) they committed is an example of crule and unusual punishment. My cousin Cameka and I know first hand how it feels not to have our fathers in our lives. Sad to admit, I don't even remember what it's like to have a father present in my life. The system is sooooo corrupt I don't understand how sex offenders and muderers are given 2nd chances at life, but crimes that fall under drugs and wepons (which are usually committed by young black men) are given sentences as absurd as 100 years without parole. It's just not fair.

Many people (including me) would say that it's better not to have a father at all than to have the influence of a criminal drug dealer. I think you are much better off, considering the alternative.

Population numbers I see are limited to 10-year incriments, but here they are.
1980: 315,473
1990: 395,934
2000: 540,828
I can't be certain these numbers are accurate. Nor can I tell you if they are for Charlotte only or for the metro area.
