Over the past 6 months, there has been quite a bit of crime at the Pointe Apartments off of Tyvola Rd in SW Charlotte. The first instance happened in September when a female resident walked into her apartment and noticed footsteps leading to her bedroom. They led to her bed under which an Hispanic male was lying down smoking a cigarette. He got up and she hit him with a broom several times and he then fled, and was not captured.
Most recently, over the last 8 weeks to be specific, there has been one break-in which occurred on a Tuesday between 2:00pm and 10:30, an armed robbery which happened on a Monday at approximately 8pm and th most recent was at approximatley 7pm on February 25, 2007. Two residents were exiting their vehicle when their were confronted by 2 B/M's wearing hoodies. One resident suffered minor injuries, but was not treated and called the police immediately after the incident.
So if you know anyone thinking about relocating to this apartment complex, in their best interest and for their own saftey, please tell them to look elsewhere.

Well there was another robbery on Saturday reported at 4:50 in the afternoon. Check the crimes reported section and search for "Sharview". Security only comes through after 9pm, they drive around for 5 minutes and leave. Security gate never works, but its open during the day anyway.

Brian would you happen to know the name of the security company that the apartment complex uses.

I believe they are called K9 security. I googled and could not find any info. The police are coming through more often now, so that will help for the time being. That robbery was actually 4:50 am, I forgot about military time. It just so happens I came home late that night too, so I will consider myself lucky.

I talked to Tracy and he told me that K9 security is one of the best company around the area but yep cant find anything on them, I know there are some more well known security outfits in the area cause I know Allied Burton called me but I was in the process of testing out with the CMPD. Stay safe

IMO, if K9 was so good, the instances of armed robberies would not have increased after they started patrolling the grounds. Professional Police Services is a good; we use them at work.

When I move in I will run some options by Tracy to see what we can do to make things safe, I will not be able to be employed by the complex while in training but as soon as training is up in Sept I will be able to do some work for the complex but in the mean time I will get tracy the numbers he needs to try to get the Apartment complex on the CMPD second job board it will be a little money but I think if we had some type of meetings that we set up or something we can make some type of program work. The key is money but when I think it comes down to it if we are willing to take a $10.00 a month security hike then I think for are safety is well worth the burger and fries at steak and shake.

A few questions
1. Is there anyone else who lives in The Pointe Apartments on here?
2. What schools feed into the area of The Pointe most primary at this time, but I would love to know what area has the best schools.

From my understanding, CMS schools are not too good. Many people would even call them a disgrace or a joke, however I can state my opinion on this matter as I have very little experience with them. They did hire a new Superintendent earlier this year and he is making some good changes. CMS just let 21 teachers go that were alledgedly not performing up too par. Many families have now opted to move into neighboring Union County as well as York County, SC. One school system in Ft. Mill however decided to cap enrollment at leat until 2009 since so many people were moving there specifically for that purpose and the relatively small city could not handle it. The only kids that can start school there are ones beginning kindergarten. Closest schools to the Pointe are Nations Ford Elementary as well as EE Waddell High School, which is prettyy large.

Brian,
This is something that I pulled off of the CMPD Directives site which covers Secondary Employment of off-duty police. Which I would say would be the best ideal and I will run this thru Tracy when I arrive there in a few weeks, is to get rid of this K9 security unknown if they are armed or not but, I would say tenants might want to have police there instead of a security officer
ATTACHMENT # 1 RULES GOVERNING APARTMENT SECURITY
EMPLOYMENT 1. Officers desiring to engage in secondary employment in resident security positions will advise the prospective employer to notify the Secondary Employment Coordinator in writing. Apartment security employment will not be authorized until the employer and conditions of employment are approved in writing by the Department.
2. The prospective employer must: a. State the intention to employ secondary employment officers and the specific needs for police services. b. State the specific duties to be performed and the compensation for these duties.
3. Officer engaging in Apartment Security Employment must: a. Complete the required probationary period of employment prior to engaging in any Apartment Security job. b. Possess an approved Permit to Engage in Secondary Employment. c. Provide to the Secondary Employment Coordinator the name of the apartment complex, location and the name of the resident manager or supervisor. All subsequent changes in management or complex name will also be reported. d. Provide prompt notification of termination of employment or any change in employment status to the Secondary Employment Coordinator.
4. Apartment Security Officer Duty Guidelines a. Apartment Security Officers must confine their duties to those of a law enforcement nature. Notifications of evictions, collection of rent, bad checks, and enforcement of complex rules, regulations or policies which are not otherwise violations of the law are prohibited. b. Apartment Security Officers will not respond to complaints after consuming alcoholic beverages. In such instances, the officer will contact the Communications Division and request an on-duty officer be dispatched to handle the complaint. c. Apartment security officers will not respond to a complaint in the complex in which they are employed while on-duty unless dispatched to that location by the Communications Division or employed as a resident security officer for the Charlotte Housing Authority and are responding to a complaint or need for service at a complex within their assigned district. d. When responding to complaints where enforcement action is anticipated, Apartment Security Officers will notify the Communications Division and furnish the location and nature of the complaint and request assistance from on-duty officers.

Interesting. What is unclear to me is if is K9 is a security company or a private police company. Charlotte has private police companies, and they have full powers of arrest if they witness a crime being committed (other than things like traffic infractions). I am not sure what all of the rules regarding private police are either.
The good and bad news: The bad: The gate was open all last night because it was still open this morning. The good: The gate was working when I cam home. Since it is getting darker later now, plenty of people were outside (residents) and I have noticed residents being more watchful.

Brian,
Do you know of a Apartment watch or anything like that? I think we should look into setting something like that where we could bring to management for the off duty employment that is ran thru the CMPD and the complex will have to tell them what they are looking for how many officers they are going to need if they are going to use city squad cars with all the extras will be a higher price for the complex but in all it is a off duty CMPD officer that works the complex who has direct communication with dispatch and will be able to route on duty patrols there much faster than a contract company as far as private police not to many states have that most of the time it is armed security which still goes thru the city.
I think that will be the best way to go with if you ask me how many residents would you say live at the Pointe

I haven't posted for a while. I think they have attempted a watch before but to no avail. I have noticed much more of a police and security presence recently and it has helped cut back on instances of criminal activity. Yesterday I saw security drive through and a little but later I saw to bicycle officers come through. I'm buying a house in SC soon. You can never completely away from crime, but there is much less of it there than in Charlotte.

Long time no see Brian,
Have not seen you on the forums in a while, I try and check this section everytime I come online because it is where I live.
So far I like the area cant really say anything bad about it so far, pretty much for me this apartment is very nice and it is only being used while I am in training which is less than 1.5miles from here.
After that I will be looking to buy a house in Ballentine very nice area there to raise a family.

Be weary of the listed apt location. The Edgegreen (Echodale Dr, Glenrock Dr) neighborhood is located directly south of the complex, which is fraught with narcotic activity. Upon working that side for 6.5 years, Nations Ford/77 was our hotspot for narcotics, prostitution, and robberies. Numerous suspects resided in the Edgegreen community. Although the complex is partially gated with a chain-linked fence, it would not dampen the criminal activity, which the cup runneth over. A large problem from within the complex revolved around Larcenies from and of Autos. Unless there has been a positive transition in the past two years in case history, the complex is extremely dimly lit, the lack of light ALWAYS harbors criminal activity. In addition, appx 80% of our responses to the complex yielded one, if not both, gates were completely ajar and non-functional, permitting the wicked to enter. During times when suspects were spotted within the complex, they almost always fled on foot south from Sharview into the woods and into the deep gorge which connects to Glenrock Dr.
FYI: Be careful, don't leave valuables inside your vehicles, always secure your vehicles, park under light posts, perform at least 1-2 passes around your parking space before finally parking your vehicle (robberies in the past yielded that suspects were lying in wait behind other vehicles in the PVA), and ALWAYS maintain a "yellow" state of awareness as follows:
4 Levels of Readiness: (correspond to general levels of alertness)
white state - one is largely oblivious to their surroundings and events taking place around them. One is not paying attention and is subject to "It won't happen to me" attitude.
yellow state - this is a heightened awareness of one's surroundings. It is synonymous with a yellow traffic light, meaning "proceed with caution". Some "happy-go-lucky" types identify this as a "paranoid" state, which is a shear exaggeration. Living in "yellow" isn't about paranoia. It merely acknowledges the fact that the world is not always friendly and that it is wise to keep an eye out. In this state, one goes the extra mile to check out their surroundings.
orange state - when one feels that something around them isn't right or that something might happen that won't be conducive to their overall health. At this state, one realizes that some action is necessary.
red state - this is the state that movement or action takes place. It's action "now" and is a state when confrontation is imminent.

They blocked off the back gate completely about 2 years ago. They put in several stadium style lights about 6 months ago which are BRIGHT, but are not through the entire complex. A lot of criminal activity has still occurred after these things were done.
A police officer once told me that Glerock is one of the most dangerous streets in Charlotte. There has been at least one homicide there and probably more.
I am glad to be out.
Ballantyne is a really nice area, but of course not free from crime.

I really dont beleive any place is crime free but there is alot of crime that goes on in Charlotte,NC big difference from being stationed in upstate NY I think we had two murders within the last 3 years up there.
Ballantyne is nice with a price the violent crimes will go down there but you still are going to have property crime that will increase because of the area. I am still looking for a nice area and will keep a eye open if anyone has any good area feel free to let me know but as far as the Pointe I will be here until at least April of 2008.
When did you move out of the complex Brian?

I have been out for a couple of weeks now. There was a shooting off of Nations Ford Rd last night. It's on www.charlotte.com. It's nice to not hear gunshots at midnight. I know the police academy does practice during the day, but I often heard gunshots real late at night, so I know they weren't coming from there. Rock Hill/York County is nice so far, but there are some rough parts as well.

SURPRISE!!
"09:14 AM EDT on Friday, May 11, 2007 A man suffered critical injuries after an overnight shooting in south Charlotte. The shooting happened on Edgegreen Dr. off of Nations Ford Road around 1:15 a.m. Detectives who were on the scene said they were interviewing witnesses trying to figure out what happened before the shooting. The victim is listed in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center. Police believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. The victim's name has not been released and no one has been arrested. "
