The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's South Division is advising residents to be aware of solicitors ringing doorbells and offering a work service as the weather gets warm. Residents are calling already, worried that some offering a business service may really be at their door to scout out a potential burglary. In an e-mail alert to residents, police offer these tips and advice: • Going door-to-door offering a business service is legal before dark. • Persons must have identification showing the company that employs them. • If they approach your home, let them know you are there, but do not open the door. Residents can sign up for southern Meck crime notifications by going to www.cmpd.org. Click "Notify Me" on the left side of the page. Then go to the "Crime Alerts" header to sign up for e-mail alerts specific to the South Division area.

Last night after dark in our neighborhood near Randolph and Wendover Rds. we had a door to door solicitor claiming he was with "Sears". He was a 20 something white male dressed in a suit with a young white female in a white short coat. I did not open the door but spoke to him through the door. I called 911 to report them as suspicious persons. Has anyone else encountered solicitors from "Sears"?

Maybe real maybe not. Do NOT take the chance. You did the right thing in calling 911.
