It's not on the crime blotter, so I wanted everyone to know about it - my brother was leaving CPCC on Wednesday. He had his windows down (conserving gas) & a tall white male w/ a blond ponytail pulled a knife on him & jumped in his car. The charges are theft & kidnapping. The guy had my brother drive all around town w/ a knife to his throat & made him drive to the bank. Keep your windows up & your doors locked, folks! The officer said "People think Charlotte is still a small town, but it's not. You have to be in survival mode. Media doesn't tell people what they need to know. Charlotte is dangerous & you always need to be thinking 'What if?...'" Thought you'd like to know...cops shouldn't leave it to the media, either. They need to help educate the public. And citizens like us need to keep each other informed!

4 Levels of Readiness: (correspond to general levels of alertness)
white state - one is largely oblivious to their surroundings and events taking place around them. One is not paying attention and is subject to "It won't happen to me" attitude.
yellow state - this is a heightened awareness of one's surroundings. It is synonymous with a yellow traffic light, meaning "proceed with caution". Some "happy-go-lucky" types identify this as a "paranoid" state, which is a shear exaggeration. Living in "yellow" isn't about paranoia. It merely acknowledges the fact that the world is not always friendly and that it is wise to keep an eye out. In this state, one goes the extra mile to check out their surroundings.
orange state - when one feels that something around them isn't right or that something might happen that won't be conducive to their overall health. At this state, one realizes that some action is necessary.
red state - this is the state that movement or action takes place. It's action "now" and is a state when confrontation is imminent.

Haven't caught him yet. He left some straws in my brother's jeep, though. The police dept is processing the straws, hoping the guy is in the system. And the bank got great video of him. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

IF the perp is Donald Patterson- you should check out his priors. Make sure you are sitting down because you will be shocked!!! I was amazed to see him re-arrested today for robbery and kidnapping. He should have been locked up years ago! Here is a link to a post about him from March of last year: www.crimeincharlotte.com/2006/03/watch-out-for-con-artist.html

That's the guy. We saw his list of priors on Wednesday. He's dangerous, for sure!

I'm glad to hear that your brother is alright, and that they caught the attacker. Now, if we can just get the 'system' to keep this guy locked up for awhile. I do hope you will let us know if the guy gets reasonable amount of time, this time around.
Also, situational awareness is key, and keeping windows up and doors locked does make you less attractive as a target for some crimes, especially the edged weapons kind. However, many of these crooks have something more substantial at their disposal, such as a firearm.
I do hope you and yours will give some thought to how you would react in different situations, how you may avoid situations through good safe habits, and situational awareness, but if all else fails, everyone should have a plan B, and or C, or how ever many plans it may take to either be able to avoid a situation, flee a situation, or if necessary defend themselves, none of which should be taken lightly.
Luckily, your brother's complying worked out for him. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case.
Good luck getting and keeping that guy behind bars and to you all staying out of harm's way.
Regards,
Karz

I just joined & this is my first post. First off glad your brother is ok but it could've been different. I am a former police officer. First off when this happens you have nothing but lousy choices. However your best option is to take the chance now & force a crash rather than find out what is going to happen later at crime scene 2 where you alone with the carjacker. You have to have your mind set that this is what you will do if faced with this situation. Will you be injured ? Well it's very possible. But you still have the best chance right then.
