With the price of gas rising every time I drive past a gas station I am thinking of commuting via the light rail but am not sure how safe it is. I have not heard much about crime in regards to the light rail other than people not paying for their trip. Has anyone heard any stories about crime on the light rail or the light rail parking lots (car theft, robberies, muggings, etc)?

I've wondered the same thing. I know in other cities, the parking lots are prime opportunities for car break-ins. Guess if you keep your car clean and don't leave anything worth taking in site, then they'll probably target another car instead. Another assumption, but if you work around 8-5 then chances are there will be enough people riding with you, so muggings would be limited. I'd still be skeptical if riding in the later evening hours.

Generally I feel the lightrail to be very -- to extremely -- safe. There are cameras throughout. Transit Police officers are standing at stations, and you will find officers walking up and down cars frequently during rides.
As an example of how strict they are, one evening a couple of friends of mine --- about six of us in total -- were leaving an event at the Mint Museum uptown, heading to get dinner and drinks down in Dilworth. One of my buddies pulls out 7 or 8 mini bottles of some kind of shot, like Goldschlager, and passes them around to all of us -- I declined, saying that I knew drinking was not aloud on the train. These are the tiny airplane-sized bottles, mind you.
Everyone did their quick shot, put their bottles in their coat or blazer pockets (we were all dressed up from the event, jackets/ties etc.) and everyone was mindful of not littering. Thirty seconds later our train stops at Carson Blvd Station and -- whammy! -- transit cop gets on, and we're all booted off! Security cam viewers had seen us and that next station we were DONE. I have taken the light rail scores and scores of times, including the last trains of the night, never had any problems and as you can tell -- police is pretty johnny-on-the-spot!

Crimedawg that was a great story, you can bet that the transit police will run a tight ship when it comes to rule breaking of any kind on the trains . They cannot afford to let crime get a foothold on their baby. Well at least we know that big brother is on the job!!! I just wish the city (DA) took property crime as serious.
The average business owner does not stand a chance against the billion dollar investment of the trains when it comes to crime prevention. I am very surprised that your group were not wrote tickets.
