Does anyone know if there is any requirements for how far away registered sex offenders have to stay from schools?
The reason I'm asking is I went to the registered sex offenders site and typed in zip 28277. I was surprised to see there is someone who lives right across the street from Endhaven Elementary school!
And liberals wonder why we drive our kids to school.........

Disregard my previous post. I just found out he was run-off by the neighborhood.

Ouch Saf. Is this how they ran him out of the neighborhood?? I can't say I agree with the tactics but I do understand the concern... Investigators probe south Charlotte fire - Home of registered sex offender By: STEVE LYTTLE A south Charlotte home was heavily damaged in an overnight fire, and investigators are on the scene this morning trying to determine the cause. A registered sex offender had lived at the home on Ridge Haven Lane near Johnston Road and concerned neighbors had been complaining to police about him recently. The house is about 900 feet from Endhaven Elementary School. A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer sent an email to area residents last week saying the man, who'd been convicted in 1996 of kidnapping and lewd/lascivious acts with a minor, was complying with state and federal regulations. He had registered his address when he moved to North Carolina. "We understand that this concerns many parents and students who attend this elementary school. However at this point we can not take any legal action since he has not done anything illegal," Officer P.M. Grant wrote. It is unclear whether the man was still living in the house when the fire started at about 2 a.m. this morning. Charlotte Fire Capt. Rob Brisley said nobody was home when the fire was reported. Brisley said the fire, which did about $300,000 in damage, took about 40 minutes for firefighters to control. Investigators are unsure what caused the fire but hope to know more by the end of the day. Link to article: www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/news/breaking_news/15731034.htm

Great timing on my post yesterday, I wasn't aware this had been covered by the media previously.
The information I have came from someone who lives in an adjacent neighborhood. Supposedly this guy had been given 10 days to move out and he had in fact moved out. If someone did this to spite that guy they missed their target. He didn't even own the house, just a renter. What they did was cause a Charlotte firefighter to be injured.
I hadn't looked at the predator's list in a long time. Last time I checked there was no one in 28277 so I was surprised to see three there, even more suprised when I realized one address was just across from Endhaven.

Hey saf,
You aren't kidding- good timing. This article was published this morning so the fire was last night. People think they should take matters into their own hands sometimes and its not a good thing!
I would suggest you sign up for the sex offender e-mail notification. If a registered sex offender moves within 1 mile of the address you enter- you will get an e-mail notifying you. Then you don't have to worry about checking the site all the time.
OC
PS) I was told a sex offender cannot live within 900 feet of a school. In January, the law changes to 1,000 feet.

And I do wish that everyone would take the premise of the Sex Offender Registery a step futher. While I KNOW where my children are at any given moment of the day, and I HAVE educated them about people, not just strangers that perhaps may attempt to do something naughty with them, I am MUCH MORE concerned about knowing where the convicted B&E, Assault, DWI, Second Degree Murders, etc live.
While just like the Convicted and Time Served Sex-Offenders must register, why not a simple easy to use database for others that, though they have served their punishment, still cause a threat to society.
Think about it. Some of these "Sex-Offenders" are people that perhaps were 18 year old with a 17 year old boyfrield/girlfriend who got in trouble with the family, parent presses charges, 18 year old now with a record and everyone always pointing the finger at them. Don't judge a book by it's cover is my bottom line.
