We have been asked if we would support a crime tax in Charlotte to help fight crime. NO NO NO ... Do not victimize our citizens again and again with criminal activity.
TAX the criminals !!
Raise fines and fees on all criminals on all levels. Let the convicts pay for more Police and better security in Charlotte. Afterall ... they are the reason for the crime ! Let the criminals pay. I rest my case.

Good idea the only problem with it is they (the crooks) wouldn't pay it for the most part.
Their crooks, mostly poor and don't have the money in the first place. If you leave them in jail it will end up costing the tax payer more so where is the savings?
I also don't think it would generate enough revenue to support new Officers. Plus most fines go to the state not the county.
I think a local SIN TAX ----- alcohol and such with fee's and fines would generate more revenue but would probubly not pull in enough funding to help much.
It's all academic in my opinion. There is a very hard time coming economically for us all.
Tough choices will have to be made about the allocation of funds.
Crime will do what it does during hard time's. Go up.

How about taking and keping a portion of the bond to pay for more crime fighting tools. If that isn't legal, assess a "use tax" for the jail and make the offenders pay the tax before they are released. Non-refundable. If you're in the jail, you pay. Period. Makes no difference if you're found not guilty, you were in the jail, you pay for it.
Or charge mileage for the ride in the police car similar to how an ambulance service does. $100 base rate, plus $20 per mile. You don't pay it, you don't get out.
