I volunteer at a lot of Charlotte/Mecklenburg schools and ask for the really at risk schools when they call me.
I was Proctoring yesterday for some 9th graders.
I watched for the first 10 or so minutes of this first of several 25 min tests, and noticed a good number of kids who were just taking a nap.
Keep in mind we are only there to watch for cheating. But I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I went to those who were sleeping and looked at their papers. Not one answer!
It was then I decided to start waking them up every few minutes telling them they could do and how easy the test was.
In fact I gave three of them 5 dollars each and all I asked of them was to do the best they could. (They worked very hard for this money and I was proud of them)
It was amazing what a difference somebody urging them on made.
By the last test everybody was working on the test and you could tell they knew that if they were trying to sleep or not trying to take the test I would be beside them.
Come on folks, we need more of you to go to the really needy schools and start making a difference in these children's lives.

" Telling them they could do? " What the hell is that supposed to mean? And you are a teacher? And what in the world are you doing, Bribing kids into taking a test on a subject that you obviously failed miserably in teaching them? These children don't need "more of us" to "GO" to these needy schools, We need to weed out MORONS like you who can't communicate intelligently. And if you were just there monitoring...Where was the real teacher? Hell....Give ME 5 bucks to stay awake.............What a LOAD!!

Larry,
I think it is wonderful that you volunteer at troubled schools. I agree with you when you say more parents should be involved in their child's education. If you are not working, you should be at your child's school at least once a week, in my opinion.
Children yearn for love and support. Too many parents are either unable or incapable of giving their child encouragement and support. Thank goodness we have people like you to support our children when they need it most. Sometimes all it takes is some encouragement to get these kids motivated.
It says a lot to me when a child sleeps through a test. It shows they don't give a crap how they do on a test and that is outrageous. I remember trying as hard as I could when taking tests because I cared about the outcome. Why don't these kids care? Why aren't their parents instilling in them the value of an education??
I feel terrible for the teachers in these schools. The low test scores make them look bad and it is not their fault. How can you get a child to learn when he/she refuses? A teacher cannot force a child to learn or take tests. If my teacher called my parents and said I slept through a test, I would have hell to pay at home! Parents need to wake up and take some responsibility when it comes to their child's education!

Granted, there were a few typos and disconnected thoughts in Larry's post but I was able to understand that he isn't a teacher but a volunteer. What's that say about your ability to communicate effectively, dar? Does that make you a moron, too? As for the paying children to do what they are supposed to do anyway, I think that's a poor approach, but I am not the one giving of my time to the community. Larry, you are to be commended for it, but don't pay them. Keep up the good work!

Larry,
Don't let DAR get to you. I very much agree with SKNL. There should be more of you who are actually trying to make a difference in our community. You don't have to volunteer your time, but you do...and you do it to help and hopefully make a difference in someone's life. You should be commended for that.
